According to the New York Times, after President Trump asked Elon Musk to be more aggressive, Musk ordered federal employees to report what they had done this past week or be fired. CFPB employees, most of whom are on administrative leave, received an email stating ““Please reply to this email with approx. 5 bullets of what you accomplished this week and cc your manager,” The article quotes Michigan law professor Sam Bagenstos as saying:
“This is obviously designed to intimidate employees. Musk and DOGE and the Trump administration are persistently acting in a way that disregards civil service rules and they are just counting on the courts not being able to catch up and clean up after them.
“They are counting on employees saying, ‘This is too much, I can’t keep doing this,’” he added.
