CFPB Director-Nominee refuses to commit to notifying Congress about White House calls to aid donors

Well, the Senate Banking Committee’s hearing on the nominee for CFPB director was ridiculously short. Senators got only five minutes to ask questions of three nominees for different agencies. How strange that people complain about the CFPB’s lack of accountability and then spend far less time publicly vetting the nominee to lead the Bureau than, for example, a law school spends interviewing a faculty candidate. But here are a couple of things we learned: Mr. Johnson refused to answer Senator Warren’s question about whether he would commit to notifying Congress and the inspector general if the White House attempted to intervene in an enforcement action on behalf of the Trump family or a big donor. Johnson also couldn’t identify any decisions by Acting Director Vought that he disagrees with. Sounds like Mr. Johnson knows who butters his bread.
