In this current moment, with seemingly no checks on wrongdoing and little to no accountability for corporate malfeasance, there are still many legal, legislative, and organization tools on hand to hinder, stop, and even defend against the attacks on consumer protections at the federal level. At the same time, we must keep advocating for similar consumer protections at the state level, working with state lawmakers, state attorneys general, and state regulators to pick up enforcement actions, pass state laws, and continue state investigations where the Trump’s CFPB has stopped doing its job. Perhaps when this moment passes, the urgency of this moment, and the current attacks on the CFPB and federal consumer protections will activate the public and state and local governments into building a stronger, more diverse foundation for consumer protections.
